Volvo Aero has a long experience from working in space programmes; we have been engaged in production since 1972 (Ariane 4) and in development since 1985 (Ariane 5). For Ariane 4 we manufactured the thrust chambers for the Viking engine and over the years we made over 1000 thrust chambers, making us one of the largest rocket nozzle manufacturers.
Today we are involved in research, development and manufacturing of both turbines and nozzle extension for Europe’s future transportation
systems, mainly through assignments from ESA such as Ariane 5 and its supporting development and technology programmes.
Volvo Aero has also been in close cooperation with Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne (PWR) on the RL60 engine, performed R&D activities with ESA on storable turbo pump engines, and on movable nozzles and turbo pumps for ram/scram engines, as well as delivered nozzles to MHI/JAXA, to mention some.
